Genghis Khan was an amazing warrior, politician, and conqueror. His name lives on in infamy for his vast conquests in Asia, Europe, and North America. Mongol the Rise of Genghis Khan is a documentary that follows the life of Khans son at the time of his death in 1227 AD. It takes us through Mongol's life up to that point with particular focus on his transformation into one of history's most feared conquerors. We learn about how Genghis grew up angry at how unfair it was for him to have so few opportunities at the turn of the century while increasing numbers of people flooded into Mongolia. He was attracted to an ancient religion that said all were entitled to happiness. He also had the innate ability to be able to care for his people and was able to turn their fear of war into inspiration. Genghis Khan managed to take control of much of the Mongolian tribal areas, but soon he set out on his conquest of the world. His plan was simple, but effective. As he moved east he would leave a small percentage of his men behind to guard their home base while the rest followed behind him in huge numbers. They knew that eventually they would be called back home to help guard the Mongolian lands if their home base was threatened by other tribes or neighboring countries. Before these men left however, Genghis would lay down his plans for what they should do. He would give them the ability to take over an area if they captured it. They would be given the title Khan (meaning 'khan', meaning ruler or leader). If they conquered an area and did not like the people, they could kill all the men but keep all the women and children as slaves. Genghis's vision for his empire was expansive. When he first conquered a territory he would leave 20% of his own men there to rule that area. If it grew, then he would take another 20%. It was these originally peaceful Mongols who became the first nomadic warlords who eventually began attacking neighboring countries. Eventually Genghis was the only nomad left at the top of his game. He had destroyed all who stood up to him or who tried to rob him. Mongol the Rise of Genghis Khan is an excellent way to gain an understanding of not just Genghis's skills as a conqueror but also how he was able to use them for his own personal gain. The film is about one man, but is so much more than that. Mongolia is presented in all its glory, with stories of the Mongols' struggle with harsh climate and rugged terrain interposed with scenes of fantastic steppes and stunning visuals. As the Mongols crossed the Caucasus Mountains, they were confronted by the Chazars who had just recently taken control of their part of that area. The Mongolian people had to fight with both the Chazars and their own people for control of this land. Genghis showed greater concern for his own troops than he did for those living in his conquered lands. He let his troops kill all but women and children in conquered territories so that it would be easier to control them through torture and later through marriage. Genghis Khan was able to take advantage of every situation, even death, with a strategic move.
